Insider Patch Notes 2.3.1.4
Insider Update 2.3.1.4 is now live. This Insider’s build will be explosive with the introduction of fireworks, available from the Merchant Alliance! Head to the Quest Board and grab a map to discover buried treasures hidden by pirates alike, but before setting sail take a seat with your crew and have a drink or a chat. We implore players to try their best to break sitting and sleeping.
As always, if you encounter any bugs, then please head to the
Sea of Thieves support site and let our Player Support team know.
Buried Treasures
Quest Board – Browsing Maps
- Crews can now find a Quest Board near the jetty at each Outpost, providing access to a range of maps to buried plunder.
- Crews can browse the Quest Board for maps on offer and filter by Sea Region before selecting the Island they wish to explore. While browsing, players will uncover all player generated maps on their server indicated by the gamertag of the player who created the map, along with a small number of maps pre-populated in each region to keep the Quest Board Full.
- Treasure Map Stashes will provide a small number of buried items, while hoards will have many items to find and crews are limited to taking 10 Maps per in-game day, so choose wisely!
Quest Board – Posting Maps
- Crews that have already buried treasure themselves and have a Map Bundle, can head to My Maps to post their Map to the Quest Board for other crews to follow. Some maps may be restricted from being posted, such as Outpost buried items, so only those that can be accepted by the Quest Board will be displayed.
- When maps are collected by other crews, when each treasure is dug up the original crew will be awarded with Renown and the equal Trading Company Reputation for each individual item discovered. Burying a Map to a Chest of Legends? You’ll still earn the same Athena’s Fortune Reputation when discovered by another crew!
- When posting a map, crews are free to continue their adventure or leave the server and will receive rewards for any completed maps while offline. Whether online or offline, when next joining the game, players will receive a notification of Quest Map rewards followed by the Renown and Reputation.
Burying Items
- When burying items, the number of digs required to completely bury the item may now differ from the number of digs required to dig the same item back up.
Fireworks
- Coming in with a bang, pirates will now be able to celebrate their victories with fireworks!
- Fireworks are a new resource type and can be purchased in crates from the Merchant Alliance representatives for free in this Insider’s build! Choose from an initial range of effects, with more becoming available in a future update.
In future Insider’s builds, crews will additionally discover these crates washed up emergently across the Sea of Thieves.
- Fireworks can be retrieved from the crates and will appear in players inventories. Once selected, they can be loaded into a cannon and when fired will explode in a magical display of lights. Unlike other cannonballs, a firework will first light it’s fuse when fired and after a short time will then launch into the sky.
- Fireworks stopped in their tracks by hitting an obstacle will not explode and be extinguished with a brief flash. Whilst fireworks do not damage ships if used aggressively, a rogue spark could set a ship alight!
Sitting
- Players will now find different areas on their ship, Outposts, and islands where a prompt will allow them to sit. While sitting, players can change camera position by pressing ‘Y’ on controller or ‘R’ on Keyboard.
Sleeping
- Players can also make full use of the beds found out in the world where a prompt will allow them to sleep.
- While sleeping, a player’s screen will slowly fade to black as they begin to snore and after a short time, they will begin to slowly regain health. Players can wake up at any time, any rowdy crew members can even wake them with a quick splash of water.
- Crews preferring the smaller-sized Sloop will now find the brig has been removed and replaced with a comfy mattress, perfect for a quick nap.

Known Issues
Quest Board
- Crews can currently be rewarded multiple times for a single item of treasure when burying, sharing, digging on repeat across multiple crews. Crews will soon be limited to only one reward per unique item to prevent this behaviour.
- When a server shuts down, all maps posted to the Quest Board are lost. In a future Insider’s update, when a server shuts down crews will be rewarded with a smaller amount of Renown and Reputation than a completed map, as compensation for their efforts.
- If multiple players try to take the same map from the Tavern Board, they may both receive a success message, but only one crew will receive the map.
Burying Treasure
- The map bundles look oddly positioned in the player's hand in both first-person and third-person view.
- Players shouldn't be able to bury items in the same location.
- Items that are partially buried when a player dies cannot be fully buried unless they are fully dug back up again.
Fireworks
- Players are only able to buy one Bountiful Firework Crate per crew.
- Migrating across servers while a firework’s fuse is lit causes it to be unusable when arriving on the new server.
Sitting & Sleeping
- Sitting or sleeping players appear unanimated for other players when approaching them from a distance or after joining their session while in progress.
- Players do not currently drown when sleeping underwater, and are also not removed form a seating position when the ship sinks.
- Players taking damage while sitting in a spot can often be knocked in a different direction than where they started from.
- Taking damage from certain attacks such as heavy sword strikes and Blunderbombs do not knock players out of the seated position.
Settings Menu Refresh
- On Xbox, players are unable to reset the Video Settings page to default.
- On PC, when resetting Video Settings to default, the Frame Rate Lock will default to 15 FPS.
Cannon Rowboat
- Defeating emergent enemies or emergent enemy ships with the Cannon Rowboat does not progress the relevant Commendations.
Player Input Handling
- After travelling through the Tunnels of the Damned, players may be unable to open the Settings Menu or Pirate Log.
- Treasure items, chests and pets cannot be given to or taken from another player.
Pirate Emporium
- The Pirate Emporium is currently using a range of placeholder text and imagery.
Feast of Bounty
- There is placeholder imagery throughout the event.
- The Title reward will show 5/11 when only completing four goals.
Fixed Issues

- Players attempting to use a bucket while sprinting will now instantly wield the bucket, allowing them to scoop or bail water.
