The latest Insider build is here! We’ve got new features, new fixes and new things for you to test. Full patch notes are below. Enjoy!

Insider Patch Notes - Update 2.0.5.5

Insider Update 2.0.5.5 is now live! This update introduces the hotly anticipated Reaper’s Chest into Dark Relics along with the introduction of all commendations and rewards for testing. Alongside Dark Relics, this build introduces a functional test of the Pirate Emporium in addition to a range of balancing changes and fixes we are looking for your feedback on!

As we approach our August release, Dark Relics continues to be the key focus for Insiders in this build. Head out onto the seas in search of the new Reaper’s Chests and visit Duke in your local Outpost Tavern to find a range of voyages on offer and retrieve those artefacts before it’s too late!

If you do encounter any bugs, then please head to the Sea of Thieves support site and let our Player Support team know.

Dark Relics

  • The Reaper’s Chest – When exploring the world, crews may see a plume of light reaching up into the sky on the horizon. Reaching the source, players will find the new ‘Reaper’s Chest’ and once collected the plume of light will be extinguished. Your crew is not out of danger just yet, once collected the Reaper’s Chest will appear on the ship map for all other crews on the sever as begin your journey back to Duke to hand in! In this build the frequency of Reaper’s Chest spawns have been drastically increased to aid in Insider testing!
  • Dark Relic Commendations and Rewards – Following the resolution of the configuration issue, the Dark Relic commendations and rewards are now available to unlock. Earn Doubloons, unlock Titles and purchase the ‘The Mercenary Cannon’, ‘Mercenary Wheel’ and the ‘Mercenary Capstan’ for taking part in the search.
  • Dark Relic Voyage Pricing – All Dark Relic Voyages have now been appropriately priced in Duke’s Shop, requiring between 5 and 10 Doubloons to purchase.

Pirate Emporium

This Insider build introduces our Pirate Emporium on the Front-End for an initial functional test. The purpose of this initial build is to test the ability for players to make a purchase inside the Pirate Emporium - as the implementation of the Pirate Emporium is still Work In Progress, please do not provide feedback on the store experience itself.

  • Testing Ancient Coins – Each Insider has been granted 400 Ancient Coins to facilitate this testing, players can visualise their Ancient Coin balance inside the Pirate Emporium on the game’s front-end.
  • Placeholder Pirate Emporium Purchase – As part of this functional test we have added a placeholder purchase to the Emporium. Insiders can purchase a Monkey for 1 Ancient Coin and should see this purchase correctly reduce their Ancient Coin balance.

Game Balancing

  • Sword Combat Balancing – When hit with a successful sword strike, players will no longer become stunned, providing them with a window to defend from subsequent attacks. To ensure this is balanced for the attacking player, the time-penalty for missing with a sword swing has now also been reduced.
  • Pirate Legend Voyage Skeletons – Following your feedback on the recent changes to Pirate Legend voyage skeletons we have reverted the changes to skeleton difficulty and spawning frequency back to their original setup. We have however retained the now infamous Mega Keg wielding Skeletons exclusive to Pirate Legend voyages!
  • Gunpowder Skeletons – Following your feedback on the recent changes to Gunpowder Skeletons, we have reverted the changes to Gunpowder Skeleton move speed back to their original setup. We have however retained the reduction in Gunpowder Skeleton spawn frequency during island exploration.
  • Aggressive Skeleton Galleons – When sailing out in the world, crews will once again have the chance to encounter an Aggressive Skeleton Galleon breaching alongside your ship to attack. These Skeleton Galleons will now prefer Galleon Crews, however unlucky Brig and Sloops may still encounter this threat! We plan to reduce the chance of smaller ships encountering this Galleon threat in future Insider builds.
  • Skeleton Sloops – Skeleton Sloops have been seen roaming seas outside of Skeleton Ship Battles. Along with them roaming the world, Crews have spoken of Aggressive Skeleton Sloops now breaching alongside ships and attacking them. These Skeleton Sloops will prefer Sloop and Brig crews, however Galleon Crews will still encounter this threat!
  • Sailing a Sloop in the Storm – When sailing through a storm in a Sloop, the effects of the storm on the handling of the Sloop have been reduced. When inside the storm, the wheel on the Sloop will be pulled less aggressively.

Updates

  • Arena Cross Play Notification – When joining an Arena session, the notification window will now confirm which Cross Play configuration is enabled
  • Harpoon It! – Floating meat left behind after killing sea creatures can now be harpooned back to your ship

Fixed Issues

General

  • When successfully blocking a sword strike, the defender will now correctly see the block VFX and block animations.
  • Resolved several client crashes affecting Insiders.
  • When placed on a moving ship, Gunpowder Kegs will once again take damage from attacks from swords and guns.

Arena

  • When starting a contest, crews should no longer sometimes find their ships facing the wrong direction.

Tall Tales

  • ‘Legendary Storyteller’ – Quest Book has been rearranged to better support non-English languages and prevent text overlapping.
  • ‘Wild Rose’ – Quest Book has been rearranged to better support non-English languages and prevent text overlapping.

Dark Relics

  • The Athena’s Fortune Dark Relic Tip Off Voyage now uses the correct model when placing on the Captains table.
  • The Reaper’s Chest now only spawns in sunken Shipwrecks.
  • All Dark Relic items can now be placed inside a Collector’s Chest.

Pets

  • When pets need to catchup to players, they will now teleport behind them rather than in front.
  • Monkeys should no longer stutter when moving around the Ship.
  • When large groups of players and pets are together, nameplates should no longer begin to swap between players.

Known Issues

  • Open Crew Arena Cross Play – The new Cross Play settings available to Xbox players in the Arena, currently only take effect for Closed Crews. Playing as an Open Crew, you will be automatically placed in the Mixed Pool of PC & Xbox players. We are working to resolve this for an upcoming Insiders build.
  • Tall Tales Commendations Showing as Incomplete – Some players may find that after completing Shores of Gold commendations and receiving their rewards, the commendation still shows as incomplete.

Previously released updates

  • Arena Cross Play – Xbox Players now have the option in the Front-End settings menu to enable Xbox Controller preference for Arena matchmaking. This will search for Xbox players using controllers and attempt to match you with players who have also selected that option. If we cannot find any players with your preference, we will move you to a mixed platform game so you can get into the action. If you set that preference to off, then you will be matched with PC players and any Xbox players using a Mouse & Keyboard.
  • Scrambling Gamertags – Players now have a new option ‘Scramble Gamertags’. When enabled, this Scrambles Your Gamertag, Your Crew Members Gamertags and any Gamertags of Pirates you meet out in the open world. If anyone else on your server enables this feature then the scrambled names will match for everyone allowing players to strategise and shotcall as before. If you encounter another player in the world who has chosen to scramble their Gamertag, their true Gamertag will still be visible to you to ensure you know who you are playing with.
  • Keybinding for 'Show Nameplates Above Other Crews' – Players can now assign a keybind for the 'Show Nameplates Above Other Crews' option to give players fast access to show/hide the Gamertags to identify rival players should they need it.
  • Adjusted Default for Controller Look Deadzone – The game default for ‘Gamepad Look Deadzone’ has been changed from 0.1 to 0.2. This should better accommodate controllers which experience a small amount of drift. Players can still select 0.1 if they prefer.
  • Audio Experience – Various improvements to the audio experience; Digging up Bait now plays a more noticeable sound effect, Cannonball Impacts on Wood now have a more ‘woody’ feel.
  • Dark Relic Tip Offs – The Order of Souls have begun to experience visions of skeletons across the sea, performing rituals with the Dark Relics along with what appear to be Ritual Skulls. They want their Dark Relics back before something catastrophic happens and will pay good money to anyone who can retrieve them. Duke has been tipped off to the potential locations for these artefacts and offers pirates a range of Voyages to seek them out and retrieve them. Pirate Legends are tasked with heading into the Devil’s Roar to collect these artefacts, the Mysterious Stranger is strangely curious about these items and will take them off your hands.
  • Monkeys! – In this Insiders build, we want to focus the testing around the monkey. For this test build, players will start the session with a monkey companion. The true flow of purchasing a pet from the Pirate Emporium and selecting them from the Pet House will come in subsequent Insiders builds.
  • Follow the Leader – Pets will instinctively follow you as to traverse the world of Sea of Thieves, from joining you for a drink in the Tavern, to feeling the wind on its fur at sea even to navigating through dangerous islands on the search for treasure. In this build Pets will only follow players and not perform their ‘Hangout’ behaviour where they interact with the world around them, look out for this in an upcoming Insiders build.
  • Look out! – Your furry companion will react to the world around you and cower when you and the crew are in danger!
  • He looks Hungry – Cook your pet up something nice and keep them well fed!
  • Pick Him Up! – You can pick up any Pet you find in the world, whether it’s yours, a member of your crews or even a rival pirate’s. Once picked up you can give them a good stroke before giving them back to their owner.
  • Showing them Off – When holding a Pet, you can ‘Show’ them to others so they can marvel at your latest companion. When being showed, other pirates can Feed, Stroke and even Take them from you.
  • Pirate Legend Voyage Skeletons – Pirate Legends will no longer face off against bullet sponge skeletons as their health has now been reduced. However, to ensure our Legends are thoroughly challenged, we’ve drastically increased the number of Skeletons that are spawned, forcing crews to think tactically before they are overwhelmed. Not wishing to be outdone, some skeletons on Pirate Legend voyages have decided to arm themselves with Stronghold Kegs! Be prepared to Run!
  • Balancing Across All Ranks – Taking the same learnings from the Pirate Legend work, skeleton difficulty and spawning has been tweaked across all voyage ranks to challenge players with this new feel of skeleton encounter.
  • Gunpowder Skeletons – We’ve reduced the frequency of Gunpowder Skeleton spawns and have slowed down their movement to give players a fighting chance at escape. With slower moving targets, players can now use Gunpowder Skeletons to their advantage and strategically detonate for maximum effect.
  • Emergent Skeletons – When freely exploring the world, the difficulty of emergent skeletons has been reduced to ensure newer players have a safer time exploring. For players on a higher rank voyage, they will still spawn rank-appropriate emergent skeletons.
  • Skeleton Lord Ability Chaining – Skeleton Lords encountered during Tall Tales can now use their abilities in sequences to aid them in combat. For example, a Skeleton Lords can now initiate a knockback and before the players can retaliate, will have summoned reinforcements or will teleport to a new location and summon reinforcements before reengaging with the player.
  • All Tall Tales Unlocked (Insiders Only) – To facilitate testing across all our Tall Tales, Insiders have had all restrictions removed and are able to access any Tale.
  • Ranged & Melee Hit Detection – Players will now find that engaging in combat with other players out in the world is much more responsive. When targeting a rival player or skeleton then taking a shot or swinging your sword, players should find that the hit is more consistently registered, and damage applied as players expect. This improves the hit detection across the game including player encounters from ship to ship, ship to water and water to water encounters which previously had players experience more inconsistent hit detection.
  • Arena Matchmaking Improvements – When entering the Arena as an Open Crew, players will now be prioritised to load into a Tavern that is waiting to start rather than into an active contest. This should ensure contests start more quickly and closer to our full Crew and Player count, while also ensuring players start a contest at the beginning to maximise their chance of competing.
  • Improvements to Muting Other Players – The Game Options menu has been restructured to split the ‘My Crew’ and ‘Other Crews’ pages. In Adventure these settings remain unchanged, however in The Arena all players currently playing on your server are shown in the ‘Other Crews’ list. This now provides an easier way for you to see who is on your Arena server and provide the ability to mute their voice, text and phrases individually in addition to the Global ‘All Other Crews’ settings supported previously.
  • Arena Welcome Message – When joining the Arena either into the Tavern or straight into a Contest, Players will now be shown a welcome message informing them of their team name, colour and iconography.
  • Hide Crew Gamertags – A new setting has been added called ‘Show Nameplates Above My Crewmates’. This setting allows players to hide the Nameplate/Gamertag of all their crew members as a further aid to reduce the impact of stream sniping.
  • Tall Tales ‘Legendary Storyteller’ New Puzzle Locations – The Legendary Storyteller Tall Tale has had a range of new puzzle variants added to new islands for a more varied experience each playthrough.
  • Tall Tales ‘Fate of the Morningstar’ New Puzzle Locations – The Fate of the Morningstar Tall Tale has had a new island setup for a more varied experience each playthrough.
  • New Rowboat?! – After getting patched back up, players may once again find a rare new type of rowboat abandoned out in the world. These new rowboats have a harpoon attached, allowing rowers and their passengers to have even more fun on the sea!
  • Barrels of PLENTY! – Players will now find a range of items floating within Barrels of Plenty. Make sure to stop and check them out, as you may find Skulls, Artefacts, Chests, Merchant Crates, Mermaid Gems, Messages in a Bottle and even Gunpowder Kegs! Make sure to use these inconspicuous floating ‘mines’ to your advantage against rival crews.
  • Configuring Controller Look Deadzone – A new setting has been added ‘Gamepad Look Deadzone’ allowing players to tweak the size of the deadzone on their controller’s right Stick. The smaller the deadzone the quicker the right stick responds to input, the higher the deadzone the slower the right stick responds to input.
  • Configuring Controller Response Curve – A new setting has been added ‘Gamepad Response Curve’ allowing players to tweak the Response Curve of their right stick, which sets the mapping between input and looking. Increasing the value allows some players to make finer aiming adjustments on their right stick easier.* A Response Curve setting of 1 is linear mapping; the players aiming sensitivity will get equally faster the more they push the right stick.* Any Response Curve setting above 1 is a non-linear mapping; higher values will provide more accuracy near the centre and less accuracy near the extents.
