Insider Patch Notes - Update 1.4.4.1

We’re excited to share some of the new features we’ve been working on behind the scenes in preparation for future updates. This build also introduces your first opportunity to unlock an Insider reward in the main game from your actions in the Insider Programme, head to https://www.seaofthieves.com/insider to learn more about these rewards!

Upcoming Milestone!

Following our recent retail release on 6th February, we have been busy preparing our next update. The below features have been in testing with our Pioneers previously and are being prepared for release later this month.

  • Mercenary Voyages of the Devil's Roar & Shores of Plenty – Visit Duke to find new ‘Mercenary Voyages’ on offer. Both voyages cost 5 Doubloons, additionally, the Devil's Roar voyage offers significantly higher rewards!
  • Reaper's Run of Shipwreck Bay – Duke by the bar offers another treacherous 'Reaper's Run Voyage’ costing 5 Doubloons to challenge daring pirates. Any crew willing to accept this challenge must brave the waters surrounding Shipwreck Bay - with multiple crews all heading to the same location, prepare to do battle!
  • The Gilded Mercenary Voyage of Legends - Pirate Legends should visit Duke to find the return of a popular voyage - the notorious 'Gilded Athena’s'. This voyage can only be taken once, so make it count!
  • Shipwreck Reaper Sails, Mercenary Eye of Reach & Blunderbuss - Visit Duke for his next set of Time-Limited cosmetics; Mercenary Eye of Reach, Mercenary Blunderbuss & Shipwreck Reaper Sails.
  • Mercenary Cosmetics Bundle - The previously-exclusive 'Mercenary' cosmetics bundle is now available for purchase at Outposts across the world. Head to the Wilds, Ancient Isles or Shores of Plenty to purchase the Mercenary Clothing, Equipment, Pistol & Cutlass from their respective outpost stores.
  • New Player Onboarding Improvements - The final onboarding popup informing players where to purchase their first voyage now persists onscreen until the onboarding is complete.
  • Year One Celebration Shop Items – To celebrate our first year, for a limited time players can purchase two exclusive cosmetics. Pick up the Golden Sailor’s Hat and Golden Sailor’s Cannon for only 320 gold each from their respective outpost shops – get them before they’re gone!
  • Xbox Mouse & Keyboard Support – Players on Xbox can now take full advantage of Mouse and Keyboard support on their favourite console!
  • Xbox Chatpad Chat Support – Players on Xbox can now use a Microsoft Chatpad to engage in Text Chat with other players. Press ‘T’ (Default) to initiate chat or rebind from your settings menu.
  • Wielding Weapons – Removed the forced firing delay when wielding a gun after sprinting or undocking, allowing players to fire sooner. The forced firing delay when switching weapons still remains.
  • Construction in Progress – Building work appears to have begun around the Arches rock formation, what are they building?

Tall Tales!

Tall Tales introduces a volume of new story-rich quests into the world of Sea of Thieves, an experience that is very different to our existing quests. Whether engaging with the Tales solo or with a crew of friends - each Tale provides a glimpse into the growing lore of Sea of Thieves while showcasing new and exciting features along the way!

Unlike our current voyages, Tall Tales are begun where players locate the Tale Books out in the world. Upon starting the Tale, you'll have to use your new Quest Book to determine where to go next and as the Tale progresses, use the information within to solve puzzles hidden in the pages.

  • Tall Tales: The Cursed Rogue – This Tale follows the legend of a Skeleton Lord who was once a humble treasure seeker like yourself. Can you solve the puzzles left behind and track down this elusive character? Head to Madame Olive at Plunder Outpost to find a new Tale book placed beside her.
  • Tall Tales: Revenge of the Morningstar – This Tale follows the last known whereabouts of a crew lost at sea, can you trace their steps? Head to Sandra at Dagger Tooth Outpost to find a new Tale book placed on her table.
  • Voyage Voting - With the introduction of Tall Tales, crews can venture out with both a current Voyage and a Tall Tale active at the same time. Once started these can be found and cancelled from the Captain's Table.

Pets!

This build introduces an incredibly early version of our Pets out into Insider testing. It’s an important step to get the core functionality tested as we continue to iterate and grow their interactions with the world.

  • Random Pet Allocation – On joining the game players will be randomly gifted either a Monkey or Parrot as a pet.
  • Pet Movement & Interaction – Pets will follow your pirate as they traverse the world, in this build however your pet will not follow you onto your ship – fear not, on stepping off onto an island your pet will reappear and continue to follow on your adventure. You can of course pick up yours or another pet you find out in the world for a closer inspection, but stay away from the cannons…
  • Pet’s Reacting to their Owners – You’ll quickly find that pets will react to certain actions performed by players, they currently only have a few abilities trained – but looking forward to growing this in coming build.

Harpoons!

  • Harpoon - After all the waiting, the Shipwrights have finally delivered the harpoons we ordered! Each Ship now has two harpoons fitted in the recesses on the bow; latch onto rival crews in the heat of battle or onto the environment for some advanced sailing tactics. This initial build delivers the base functionality; [RT] to Attach and Detach the Harpoon, [LT] to Reel in and [X] will lock the length
  • Harpoon Spinners – Harpoons now have spinners attached to better visualise the spooling and reeling of the rope.
  • Harpoon Audio – Attached various Harpoon audio effects to improve the player feedback when using the Harpoon

Expanded Ship Damage!

  • Ship Damage - Hull Holes - When targeting shots into your enemy’s hull, repeated shots in the same place will now grow the size of the damage holes. These new holes vary in size and increase the rate in which your ship fills with water and takes longer to repair!
  • Ship Damage - Collapse the Mast - Landing a clutch shot on an enemy’s mast will now drop the mast onto the deck of the ship, slowing their speed. Your enemies will need to both raise the mast and patch it with wood to secure it back in place.
  • Ship Damage - Drop the Anchor - Targeting a shot onto the capstan will drop the anchor and damage the capstan pegs. Your enemy will need to repair their capstan pegs to retain its original raising speed.
  • Ship Damage - Disable the Wheel - Targeting an enemy’s wheel will destroy pegs within the wheel, reducing the effectiveness in turning the ship. Your enemy will need to repair their ship wheel pegs to retain its original turning rate.

Insider Features Still Active

  • Shop Browsing - Finding a specific category of item is now much easier in the shop, filters have been added to all shops.
  • Molten Sands Fortress – Molten Sands Fortress is now active! Faceoff against skeleton waves while dodging volcanic rocks and luring them onto geysers before raiding the vault for Ashen Rewards!
  • PC High Dynamic Range - Support for HDR compatible Screens on PC. Players can access a 'HDR Calibration' page with settings to calibrate the brightness of the display.

Fixed Issues

  • Voice Chat should now be much more reliable when many players are speaking at the same time.
  • Resolved clipping issues in the scope of some Eye of Reach Rifles.
  • Players can emote while vomiting, and no longer see a stream of vomit coming from their head.
  • Resolved issue where a player in vicinity changing pages on their Quest Book would cause all players screens to flicker.
  • Tall Tales Skeleton Encounters will no longer return to passive state after engaging then leaving relevancy.
  • Shooting a harpoon at the base of another ship will no longer cause that ship to forced upwards.
  • Resolved stretched texture on Majestic Sovereign Trousers.
  • Replaced placeholder text in the latest commendations & cosmetics in Duke’s shop.
  • Resolved issue where Reaper’s Mark Commendation progress was granted without requiring players to equip the Reaper’s Mark Flag.
  • Fruit placed on a cooking pot will no longer inherit the colour of the first item cooked on the cooking pot.
  • Resolved issue where players could get stuck between trees on Roaring Sands.
  • Resolved issue causing Harpoon to jitter when attaching to the front of another moving ship.
  • Resolved SFX issue when retracting a harpoon after being tethered.
  • Players can no longer use Ship Harpoons to ‘climb’ the environment – Sorry!

Known Issues

  • Extended Black Screen on Loading - There is a chance that players may be held indefinitely on the black loading screen with ship wheel spinner icon when returning from the Ghost Ship.
  • Revenge of the Morningstar Jacket – During the Revenge of the Morningstar Tale, players will collect an outfit from the collector’s chest. In this build this is presented as an ‘Admiral Jacket’ in the players Clothing Chest – this will be replaced by the full Morningstar outfit in an upcoming build
  • Questbook Page Turning - When using rebound Q, E, Left D-Pad or Right D-Pad buttons, you are unable to turn pages on a Tall Tales Quest Book. To workaround this please reset your keys to default
